今回は、いい波を見極める方法についてご紹介します。波の発生源が「近い」＝「波が大きい」とは限りません。波は風によって発生しますが、この段階での波は「風波」という小さな波です。この風波が、ある程度の距離を伝わることで、うねり（セット）へと成長するのです。低気圧が通り過ぎて風が穏やかになったころ、海にうねりが残っていればチャンスです。まとまりの良いきれいな波でサーフィンできるかもしれません。
良い条件は、やはり風が弱いことになります。オフショアも波を整えてくれるのですが、強すぎればうねり自体が弱くなってしまいます。サイドやオンショアが強すぎると、風によって波自体がバラけて波数は多くなり、サイズが下がってしまうことすらあります。このことから、サーフィンする上において、風の状態が何より重要になります。風は目で見ることができないものなので難しいですが、いい波に出会える機会を増やすためにも、知識を少しでも増やしておきましょう。
