今日の波はどんな波だったか？と聞かれた時に、うまく説明できるようにサーフィン用語を覚えましょう。うまく説明できたり、サーフィン用語を使えるようになれば、カッコいいこと間違いなし！のはずです。でも、用語だけではサーフィンはうまくならないので、あしからず。
【ウネリ】
海洋上で吹いた風によって海面にさざ波が立ち、その小さなさざ波がいくつも集まってウネリとなります。ブレイクする前の状態です。はるか彼方の海洋上からやってきたウネリが水深の浅い場所まで来るとブレイクし、サーフィンに適した波になります。
【セット】
波は数個単位でまとまってやってきます。これをセットと呼びます。セットの最後の波が終わるとしばらくフラットな状態が続き、そしてまた次のセットがやってきます。大勢の人が一斉に1つ目の波に向けてパドリングを始めるようであれば、1つ目の波は見送って2つ目以降に乗るのも狙い目です。ゲッティングアウトの際は逆にセットとセットの間のフラットなタイミングを狙います。
【レギュラー/グーフィー】
岸に向かって右に崩れる波をレギュラー、左に崩れる波をグーフィーと呼びます。サーフィンは横乗り系のスポーツなので 『つま先側のエッジで乗る』 と 『かかと側のエッジで乗る』 になり、レギュラーとグーフィーでは人によっては得意不得意が出てきます。どちらも乗れるように練習しましょう。
