サーフィンの歴史

　今までサーフィンテクニックを紹介してきましたが、今回はサーフィンの歴史についてです。
　西暦400年頃にはサーフィンの原形のようなものが存在していたと考えられていますが、はっきりとは分かっていません。航海術に優れた古代ポリネシア人が、漁の帰りにボートを用いて波に乗る術（サーフィング）を知り、そこから木製の板に乗る様になった、というのが最も有力な説とされています。
　ヨーロッパ人で初めてサーフィンを目撃したのは、イギリス人の探検家ジェームス・クック船長だと言われており、クックは、タヒチとハワイでサーフィンを目撃し、そのことを航海日誌に書き残しています。その後、これら島々にキリスト教宣教師たちなどヨーロッパ人が移り住むようになり、宣教師たちは、布教にあたってポリネシアの文化は野蛮であるとみなし、文明化を理由に彼らの文化の一部であったサーフィンを禁止し、さらにサーフボードを取り上げて焼いてしまい、ポリネシアにおけるサーフィンは近代において一度終焉を迎えたといわれています。
　近代サーフィンは、1910年代にハワイの英雄デューク・カハナモク（100m自由形ゴールドメダリスト）が初めて木製サーフボードにフィンを付けたサーフィンを始めたのがきっかけとなりました。やがてそのスタイルが、カリフォルニア、オーストラリアへと普及していきました。
　ちなみに、日本に広まったのは、1960年代といわれています。鴨川海岸（千葉）や鵠沼海岸（藤沢）などで進駐軍の軍人がサーフィンを楽しんでいる姿を見た地元の若者が、サーフボードを借りてサーフィンをしたり、木製のサーフボードを製作するのがきっかけとなって、普及していきまして、1965年には約80名によって「日本サーフィン連盟」が設立されました。

The style spread through California and Australia soon. Incidentally, it is called 1960s to have spread to Japan. The local young man who caught a sight in which the military man of the Occupation Forces is enjoying surfing on the Kamogawa seashore (Chiba), the kugenuma seashore (Fujisawa), etc. It became a cause to borrow a surfboard and to manufacture surfboards wooden in to carry out surfing たり, it spreads, furthermore "Nippon Surfing Association" was founded by about 80 persons in 1965.
